The Jesus And Mary Chain’s Damage And Joy Out In Early 2017

Written by:

The Jesus And Mary Chain are set to release a new album called Damage and Joy in 2017.

“Amputation” will be the first single.

The legendary East Kilbride outfit, which was formed by brothers William and Jim Reid back in 1983, was known for soaking pop songs in coats of feedback and their landmark record Psychocandy (1985) remains one of the most stirringly vital efforts in recorded music.

Damage And Joy will be their first new album since 1998’s Munki and makes good on the promise the band made after reforming in 2007 that new music would be on the way.

That new music has been teased for the last ten years or so and here’s an expurgated timeline of that tease:

  • In 2012 the band had confirmed in an interview that they had written new material, but hadn’t recorded any of it yet.
  • However, after reuniting with early champion and former manager Alan McGee by signing with his newly formed Creation Management in 2014, it appeared that a new album would be imminent.
  • It wasn’t.
  • In 2015, Jim Reid confirmed that the band were recording and that a new album would be out soon.
  • He also told the NME there was a reason for the delay: “We got back together in 2007 and it was the plan then. We thought, ‘We’ve got a bunch of songs, this would make a pretty good Mary Chain album’ – and then there was the usual slaps and scratches between my brother and myself. ‘I wanna do it here’ and ‘I don’t’ and then it was all ‘fuck you’ and swinging at each other. The usual shit, basically.”

At long last, McGee verified The Jesus And Mary Chain’s new record will be out in March of 2017. Not only that, but in an interview with CBC Music he said, “…It’s kinda enormous.”

The Jesus And Mary Chain may not have put out a studio record in nearly 20 years, but their 2014 live show at Glasgow’s Barrowland Ballroom to commemorate the 30 year anniversary of Psychocandy was released as a live album.
