The Amy Winehouse documentary Amy will be released this summer.
Directed by BAFTA-winning director Asif Kapadia (Far North, The Warrior), Amy is a stirring portrait of the late singer that makes good use of early footage of Winehouse that pre-dates her global fame. There are candid clips of her as a young girl, early interviews and rousing live footage that provides a narrative that’s as much an origin story as an apotheosis of the six-time Grammy winner.
Amy is shot much in the same way as Kapadia’s 2010 effort Senna, which is about the late Brazilian Formula One racing driver Ayrton Senna, in that the audio of the interviews he conducts plays over the footage of his subjects. Kapadia speaks to Winehouse’s family, ex-husband and longtime friends for Amy and their ruminations are nothing short of wrenching.
The film is produced by James Gay-Rees (Senna, Exit Through The Gift Shop) and co-produced by Universal Music.
Amy will be in theaters in Britain July 3, with a U.S. release not far behind.
