In what is perhaps one of the most quietly constructed supergroups in recent memory, The New Stew have arrived.
Comprised of Corey Glover (Living Colour), pedal-steel guitarist Roosevelt Collier (The Lee Boys), percussionist Yonrico Scott (Derek Trucks Band), guitarist Dave Yoke (Susan Tedeschi Band), pianist Matt Slocum (Aquarium Rescue Unit) and drummer Jared Stone (Stone’s Stew), the band has assembled to pay homage to classic, seminal albums in limited-run live shows.
Their new seven date run celebrates Bill Withers’ legendary 1973 Live At Carnegie Hall album and it finds the band playing the album in sequential order.
I got a chance to see them in action the other night and it was a riveting and altogether moving performance.
Glover was in fine voice and his delivery was nothing short of soulfully precise. At one point even he teared up and when I looked around me, much of the audience had done the same.
Withers’ songbook is rich and poetic and The New Stew handled his compositions with the kind of respectful musical dexterity that each number deserved.
It was a stirring and exquisite set.
